Supporting New Mothers’ Health Sooner: The Three-Week Postnatal Physiotherapy Check-Up!
Traditionally, the first postnatal assessment was scheduled for six weeks after childbirth. However, based on the latest research and evidence, earlier intervention has been shown to be highly beneficial. As such, we now recommend a three-week postnatal assessment.
Here’s why this earlier timing can be advantageous.
Early Pelvic Floor Training
By three weeks postpartum, we recommend an assessment of the pelvic floor muscles to ensure they are recovering properly and functioning as expected. This can be done through either an external pelvic floor assessment or a transabdominal ultrasound. Understanding the condition of the pelvic floor muscles helps us identify any areas that need attention and guide the development of a personalised home exercise program. This is beneficial even after a caesarean section, as pregnancy alone is a risk factor for pelvic floor dysfunction, and it’s not uncommon (especially post caesarean) to find that the pelvic floor becomes too tight after birth. Knowing what your pelvic floor is doing allows us to provide more accurate and supportive exercises at this important stage of your recovery.
Addressing Abdominal Separation Early
Diastasis Recti, or abdominal separation, is a common concern among postpartum women. Identifying and addressing this condition early is crucial for effective rehabilitation. Our three-week postnatal check allows us to start targeted exercises sooner, which supports a more effective and guided recovery process. This proactive approach can significantly reduce the likelihood of long-term issues related to abdominal separation.
Promoting an Early and Confident Return to Exercise
Many women are keen to return to exercise but may feel apprehensive about starting before their traditional six-week check. Our three-week postnatal assessment supports a more confident commencement of physical activities, tailored to each woman’s specific recovery needs. This early guidance not only assists physical healing but also restores a sense of control and supports mental health. Our physiotherapists can offer personalised advice on which types of activities are safe and beneficial at this stage.
Emotional Well-being and Support
The initial weeks after childbirth can also be emotionally challenging. By seeing mothers earlier, our physiotherapists can assess their emotional and psychological wellbeing and address any concerns regarding mood changes or ‘baby blues.’ Recognising these signs early is vital in providing timely support and referrals to mental health resources if necessary.
