COVID19 and Breastfeeding
The latest evidence is overwhelmingly in support of continued breastfeeding with appropriate precautions. There is no evidence that COVID can be passed on to your baby in breast milk, and the benefits of breastfeeding and the protection it offers outweigh any possible risks.
If you have been diagnosed with or are suspected of having COVID-19 you and your baby can be supported to remain together while continue to breastfeed.
If you are too unwell to breastfeed your baby, another option is to express regularly so that your baby keeps receiving your breastmilk and so is less likely to become unwell (your supply will remain establish so you can recommence breastfeeding when well).
Before expressing, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If using a breast pump, it is important to ensure proper cleaning is followed.
Current evidence suggests that the chance of a newborn getting COVID-19 from their birth parent is low, especially when the parent takes steps to prevent spread before and during care of the newborn:
- Handwashing prior to touching the baby, breast pump or bottles
- Wearing a mask whilst feeding and holding the baby
- Routinely clean/disinfect all touched surfaces including your baby’s change table
- Following guidelines for cleaning/sterilisation of bottles and breast pump if you are using.
- If you are using infant formula, it should be a formula suitable for babies from birth to 12 months and careful attention should be paid to the directions to prepare. Cleaning and sterilising all equipment is very important when expressing or using formula.
If you are concerned about your health or the health of your baby please contact your chosen health professional or present to your local emergency department.
