Let’s Talk Nappy Rash
During my antenatal classes I ask parents to show me how much nappy rash cream they should be used.
This is literally what a recent mum demonstrated and a very typical response.
Did you know that unless there is a rash, nappy rash cream is not necessary.
Fact!
The routine use of nappy rash cream comes from cloth nappy days where the skin needs to be protected from the wet material being against the skin.
When using disposable nappies, the use of nappy rash cream can actually cause a rash! Disposable nappies are manufactured to draw wetness away from the skin. Using creams blocks the nappy so the wetness cannot be drawn into the nappy.
Don’t believe me?
Try it. Open a nappy, put some nappy rash cream inside it and then drop some water into the nappy. The water will sit on top of the nappy as the cream works like a film of plastic.
If your little one has a rash, then nappy rash cream can be used but when applied, it should go on clear.
This will keep the skin protected and allow the nappy to draw the wetness into its core.
Some food for thought.
